"ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND"

U2's tenth studio album was released worldwide on October 31, 2000.  On its release it reached number 1 in the album charts in a staggering 32 countries, including most European countries, the USA, Australia, Colombia and New Zealand.  In the USA, it sold almost half a million copies in the first few weeks of its release. "ATYCLB" was a conscious attempt by the band to get "back to basics" with more emphasis on songs rather than effects. The title came from a line in "Walk On". The cover had the letter/numbers "J 33:3" in the background which referred to chapter 33 verse 3 in the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament.

Tracklisting: Lyrics
1. Beautiful Day  (4:06)
2. Stuck in a Moment  (4:33)
3. Elevation  (3:48)
4. Walk On (4:57)
5. Kite  (4:25)
6. In a Little While  (3:40)
7. Wild Honey  (3:47)
8. Peace on Earth  (4:49)
9. When I Look at the World (4:14)
10. New York  (5:31)
11. Grace  (5.45)

Alternate tracks:

The Ground Beneath Her Feet  (3:44)  (UK, Australia and Japan only)
Always  (3:46)  (US Limited Edition 2CD only)
Summer Rain  (4:06)  (US Limited Edition 2CD only)

In 2001, the song Beautiful Day went on to win 3 Grammy awards.  With the song Elevation featuring on the Tomb Raider soundtrack.
In 2002, Bono, Larry, Edge and Adam picked up 4 more Grammy's for All That You Can't Leave Behind:
Walk On  -  won "Record of the Year"
ATYCLB -  won "Best Rock Album"
Stuck in a Moment -  won "Best Song" (by a pop duo or group)
and Elevation won "Best Rock Performance" (by a duo or group with vocals)

Larry, Adam and Bono had this to say about the making of the ATYCLB album.

Larry:
"It was tough at times.  There were dark moments.  We chose to record in Dublin so you have to go home, deal with that leak in your roof as well.  Danny (Lanois) thought it was interfering with making the record."

Adam:
"Bono's lyrics this time, in a sense, they're less poetic, less romantic and more real.  To me they're much more about where he's coming from and what he's dealing with.  I think this record has a great tenderness.  And I'm sure it addresses the way he feels about the commitment to the band and to his family, to his children and Ali."

Bono:
"From the beginning we were excited when music met the real world, and, going into this, we reckoned that people aren't buying rock records any more because of this progressive rock lurgy, which is on the rise, where the single has been forgotton.  In our heads we've written 11 singles for this record."
Pop music often tells you everything is OK, while rock music tells you that it's not OK, but you can change it.  There's a defiance in rock music that gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning.  Most pop music doesn't make you want to get out of bed, I'm sorry to say.  It puts you to sleep."
